This year students from Rye College and Rye Studio took part in Eastbourne Sunshine Carnival and the Annual Schools Exhibition.

This much loved exhibition is one of the UK’s largest displays of children’s art work and this year more than 1,500 children from 32 local schools have taken part in free workshops with Brighton-based carnival artists Same Sky.

Drawing ideas from Eric Ravilious (1903–1942), a key artist within the Towner Collection, the project has looked at friendship including the role of tea parties and ceremonies inspired by Six Cups: Designs for Wedgewood (1937). This links into both this year’s carnival theme ‘Our Community – Our World’ and the gallery’s exhibition Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship which opened on the day of the carnival.

The artwork made by the children was displayed in Towner’s section of the carnival procession, which took place on Saturday 27 May and followed the established carnival route down Eastbourne’s seafront from Western Lawns to Princes Park.
